THE
James Joyce Tower is one of the many Martello towers designed to protect
the community against an invasion by Napoleon. It now houses a fascinating
museum dedicated to the world-renowned author James Joyce, who used
the tower as the setting for the first chapter of his masterpiece,
Ulysses.
Joyce stayed in the tower briefly as a young man and the gun platform
with its beautiful sea view, and the living room inside the tower,
are still just as he described them in his book. Ulysses immortalised
both Dublin and Joyce himself, establishing him as a uniquely skilled
writer; one of the greatest writers of the age.
The museum's collection includes: letters, photographs, first and
rare editions and personal possessions of Joyce, as well as items
associated with the Dublin of Ulysses. |
